Dear Elaine,

Welcome to the midsummer edition, in the middle of some very un-summery weather. The wildflowers were photographed in the fields and valleys of Cumbria between showers and some great hill walks.

In Ludlow we are holding the annual Arts Festival, so visitors from all over the world are here, as well as the summer course members at the Centre. There's Shakespeare and concerts, fireworks, a buzzing street scene and farm tours for the foodies.

Punctuating the Festival, and our summer course at the Centre, the town had floods like a lot of the rest of the country. The day before the rains, our local reservoir ran dry! After the worst downpour one of our guests was caught in rising waters and had to be rescued by landrover, and one of the town bridges collapsed under the volume of water.

Two days later we were in the garden again in warm sunshine.

The rainstorms haven't quite flattened everything, and after a foliar feed a few weeks ago, everything is growing so fast it's getting out of control. The salad beds are looking good though, and provided the purslane for this week's salad suggestion.
