Greetings!



A very warm welcome to this spring edition, especially to our new subscribers. This edition we have pictures from the nearby forest and fields which offer us breathing space, tranquillity and beauty, not to mention free food from spring to autumn.

We aim to give you loads of useful information throughout the year, inspire you to get outdoors, and generally entertain you. This time we have two new slots; "Out and About" and "Comment"

A very warm welcome to Cary Kikis and his team at the Fresh Network. We've known Cary since he started supplying healthy supplements by mail order, and remember getting our first shipment of E 3 Live. Since then he has expanded both the range of products and his friendly and helpful staff. We can be sure that The Fresh Network and Get Fresh Magazine, which is lucky to have Sarah, the present editor, remaining at the helm, are in safe hands. I can tell you now that the next issue is a fascinating read. If you don't already subscribe, now's the moment. See below for a link.

We are not saying goodbye to Karen and Pete, who have devotedly steered The Fresh Network and Get Fresh to the present standard of excellence, because they are still going to be very much involved in healthy living and eating, in their different ways. We send them our love and very best wishes for their chosen new enterprises, and you will probably hear from them through this newsletter too.

Lots of you have been in touch about your spring time detox and cleansing, and some of you are getting trays of wheatgrass established again after a break. Great news.

Talking about wheatgrass, looking for a Natural World programme recently and flicking through the channels, I was riveted by the sight of a tray of wheatgrass in the background of a kitchen. On further inspection it turned out to be a cookery programme by the well known F chef (doesn't stand for fruit). His colleague juiced a shot and swallowed it with every appearance of enjoyment and was obviously used to taking it, but Mr F word spat it out saying something very negative!! Just goes to show that the more toxic you are the more you will have to work at taking it (and the more you need it). Looking at the poor man's skin, even on the screen, and taking into account the famous irritability, you get the feeling that lots of plain water, less animal protein, and yes, some wheatgrass, would do him a power of good.

It is the right time to see what's out there to forage. Look out for nettles and goosegrass to make teas, (they both have a mild tonic effect, and also help to clear the kidneys) The wild garlic leaves are really strong now. Add them with some young dandelion leaves to salad. We found a few wild violets in amongst the herbs and weeds in the verges and under the blackthorn.

Emma is one of our newest Certificated Practitioners, you met her in the last newsletter.
She and her partner live close to the outdoors in their beautifully equipped van, and enjoy its well insulated warmth when the weather is wet or cold, which it certainly can be in North Wales. Emma grows her wheatgrass and the other indoor greens, juices every day, and experiments with smoothies and dehydrator treats.

She’s a great advertisement for the Living Foods Life, and has loads of energy for long mountain walks and bouldering, as well as running dance events, for which she makes delicious home made goodies.

Still getting your blueberries from Chile? Nobody’s perfect. Apparently a blueberry bush can be grown in a big tub, or even better in a raised bed, so we are looking out for a good prolific cropper.

We’ll keep you posted.


We gave a carbohydrate version of this smoothie (banana instead of almonds because of nut sensitivity) to two hot tired little boys on Easter Monday at teatime. They loved it.

If you really don't want to clock up all those airmiles on your blueberries, wait for the local bilberries and strawberries and raspberries. Meantime, there are some good pears around from rather nearer to home. Bananas? Almonds? It's a problem isn't it? Everyone will decide for themselves, and meanwhile it's warming up here and we're hoping for some fresh figs from the garden.
It's a good time to start a few trays of these, if you haven't done before. They grow fast and vibrant at this time of year, and such a delicious change from the bought in salads throughout the winter.

This time we welcome Robin Daly who is the co- founder of Yes to Life. They offer information help and support to people who have cancer or are caring for or supporting a friend or relative. Robin's youngest daughter was diagnosed with a muscle tumour at age 9, and then a bone tumour, induced by the radiotherapy, at age 13, and then another at age 23. Founded to raise funds for her treatment after the oncologists had given up on her, Yes to Life is now a thriving charity with a help centre and a really useful web site with a directory of complementary and alternative treatments. As such it not only helps many people, but also serves to remember a bright and beautiful girl.

Robin is passionate about establishing an integrated approach to cancer treatment. You can help by offering to distribute leaflets, joining Yes to Life, or sending a donation.

One of our guest experts, John Davidson, who wrote for us recently on complementary help for cancer patients also supports the work of Yes to Life.
