Dear Elaine,

Welcome to the July edition, amid April showers and March winds. The poppies were blown over in all their glory, and the new climbing roses dropped their petals early. Perversely some of the salad seedlings bolted and flowered too soon, especially the rocket and mustard greens. The pigeons attacked the blueberry buds, normally I believe they don't need protection until the fruits start to turn blue, but as you know I'm a new blueberry grower, so still learning. If there are any left to ripen, I'll send you some (virtually). All in all the Holmleigh kitchen garden is a bit beleagured.

A bit controversial, this one. If you feel strongly about petrol and oil prices, you might like the idea of boycotting the two combined big players, Esso and BP, for the rest of this year! It would certainly make them take notice if enough people joined in for such a long period..

Some of you may remember when Greenpeace called on their members to boycott BP because of their plans to drill in the polar regions, threatening the polar bears and all the rest of that wild and beautiful place. It only took a week to bring BP to the negotiating table with Greenpeace that time. Maybe this time wide consumer action might bring about not just a drop in prices, but a substantial investment from these companies in green energy. I don't know how that might be orchestrated, but first things first!

You may take the view that lower prices will mean more consumption and pollution, and therefore think this not a good idea. It's up to you.

Michele is one of the 2007 Certificated Practitioners of Living Foods, and is shortly presenting Raw in Motion, a great retreat and Living Foods Course, later this month in fact. She is a committed and enthusiatic practitioner and a great teacher with many other skills. Don't miss this one!

Only a week or two ago we passed the longest day, Here the local Green Party's summer garden party had to contend with a cool rainy day, but we have our accustomed message from Nicky Jevons, who never fails to mark the changing seasons. Thank you Nicky

Summer food last month's recipe actually but I'm repeating it because Amanda put it together so professionally during the party food prep class in June. There wasn't much left, in spite of a laden lunch table.

I am delighted to welcome my friend Jilly Evans- Heather to write on Bowen therapy for you. She has looked after me and my sports injuries, and re-balanced me when I over do things, like tugging out shrubs when overtired, or sitting too many hours at the keyboard, for years now, and her skills combined with her gentle reverence for life make her a truly healing therapist.

She is another one of those special people who come through personal injury and illness, to learn, train and go on to help make others whole. Briefly, she broke her back as a youngster, was mistakenly put in traction and made much worse, and then had a very long and painful journey to be able to walk, and then to walk upright. Imagine the physical trauma and the mental distress of a beautiful teenager denied the normal expression of life through sport and dance. She overcame both to become mentally strong, compassionate and physically graceful. She is the first to acknowledge all the skilled people who helped her, in conventional and alternative disciplines, above all the love and care of her close family and friends. She's a perfect example of how to take a day at a time, letting life take the reins, but never letting the horizons narrow.
This lovely garden in North Shropshire, was made for his wife by Colonel Harry Clive. Set in 12 sloping acres next to their home, it was started as a place for her to exercise, (she suffered from Parkinsons disease). Some years after Dorothy's death in 1942 a Trust was established to look after the garden, in her memory and for the enjoyment of the public.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Willoughby Trust, and the continued development of the gardens under the guidance of devoted and inspired Head Gardeners, with the support of the Friends. These pictures were taken at the end of May, and if I have a chance to visit again later in the year I will bring you some more.

Meanwhile if you are in the area of Market Drayton, on Bank Holiday weekend, August 24/25th, there will a special offer half price entry, a plant fair, and all the glowing colours of late summer, not to mention tea on a magnificent terrace overlooking the garden and countryside. www.dorothyclivegarden.co.uk
