The UK Centre for Living Foods
Welcome to our Sept 08 newsletter

Hello, it's been a few weeks since I wrote, because I have spent much more time in the garden than usual, frantically trying to keep up with salad beds that look like a sprouting rain forest. Also the courses have kept me busy. Don't ask where the new DVD master classes are up to! However the NEW SHOP is up and running Have a Look click here. I can't summon up much enthusiasm for looking at screens, in the summer, even though it isn't much of one around here.

I do have a great, and well organised, vegetable garden NOT mine! to introduce to you, along with the fascinating story of its owner. And I've been taking pictures in my favourite local garden and will bring you its story next time.

Continuing the theme of growing food, this month's guest writer is from the Vegan Organic Network. It's probably the perfect way to grow food, and one you can easily adopt for small scale home plots. It will especially appeal to the vegans amongst you.

What is your opinion of the current proposals for Ecotowns? Have they got them the right size/ in the right place? Houses well enough insulated? State of the art infra structure? (for heating, hot water, waste recycling etc.) Safeguards against making a quick buck by developers who don't care a about the localities OR the environment? I thought not. By the way we have a dreadfully inadequate/ opportunist scheme proposed for a small town not far from Ludlow. If that is the standard across the country, the whole idea definitely needs a radical rethink.

Here is a message from Laura at C.P.R.E., and a link for you to tell Hazel Blears how to get it right!!

FROM LAURA JANSEN AT THE CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT RURAL ENGLAND
3rd September 2008

**Tell the Government your views on eco-towns** Well, you'll be pleased to know that there are signs the Government is starting to listen to people's concerns about eco-towns. We're delighted that they are taking on board some of the points CPRE has been raising.

But we're still concerned that there is not enough movement. We support the principle of eco development, but we do not believe that many of the proposed eco-town schemes will achieve high environmental standards. Among other concerns, due to their location most eco-towns shortlisted risk being car dependent housing estates.

We really want the Government to rethink its eco-town scheme and scrap the current sub-standard proposals. Ministers should look at alternatives such as eco-quarters and redevelopment sites already coming through the planning pipeline.

We've prepared an email for you to send to Secretary of State Hazel Blears to let her know what you think.

I'm delighted to tell you that my good friend Pat Reeves is not only still staying ahead of her health challenges, and not only continuing to walk away with amazing power lifting records, she has now finished her book, in which you can read her full story. It will inspire you to tackle your own health goals, and I hope and trust will also show a wide public what can be done by going, not just a hit and miss raw diet, not just a raw but too much fruit diet, but a whole hearted green green green, live live live diet. Plus of course the other things that matter, like exercise, and looking after your mind and heart., the total Living Foods Programme in fact.

I can't believe we are approaching the last course of the year. You may have wondered why I don't offer courses in the winter months. Simply it is because, for most people a whole week on the all raw all live Living Foods Programme, is a big change. Most people do some detoxing, and it is not, in my opinion, a good idea to do that in the cold months. Ask your acupuncturist!

So if you want to set yourself up for the winter, come and spend the week October 18th to 24th here.

Paul Bradbury is a lucky man, according to the medics who were monitoring him in hospital, awaiting a heart transplant. In spite of expert care he was not making enough progress to allow the risk of a transplant, and on hospital food, that is not surprising. He was lucky also to have a mother who brought him raw and fresh foods, until his condition improved enough to have a successful transplant, and then while he began the healing journey from then.

Now, he can exercise. Just look at the hillside on which he has literally dug out the terraces, built all the raised beds, boundary fencing and other structures, and maintains a picture book vegetable garden and fruit cages. The photographs are of that part of the garden, but the lovely plantings of shrubs and trees which form the immediate backdrop, are also his creation, carved from several acres of rough fields and steep hillside.

He began this project in 1989 part time, to recuperate and to increase strength while he literally built the garden. Then he came to live here (on the edge of a small town in the lovely countryside between Shropshire and Wales) For the past four years he has been making the vegetable garden pictured here. He says he is a self taught gardener, growing by instinct, and also by instinct continuing his habit of eating lots of freshly picked raw and green salads and vegetables. He also juices the roots, celery, apples etc. (He plans a visit here shortly to look at a juicer for green juices as well) I wish I had as much space! Not least for a whole bed ofblueberry bushes! (see pic below)

Paul is now strong, can walk with his shopping up a long steep hill to his cottage, as well as daily care of all the vegetable beds and the pruning and management of acres of woodland and shrubs. His heart is strong, and he no longer has an annual check. He knows the healing power of fresh and raw food at first hand, but he also knows that two other elements played an equal part in his turn round. They were the skilled care of the medical and nursing teams, and perhaps the most important, the loving supportive care and the prayers, of those close to him.

I am sending on to you a chocolate fudge recipe from Paul Nison, because it's approaching the time of year when you just might be tempted to use chocolate as a comfort treat.

Paul takes the same line as I do on chocolate, and especially cacao, whether or not it claims to be "raw". That is don't do it! He wrote on it for us a while back, click here to read his article. I haven't got a pic of the fudge. It probably doesn't last long enough to be photographed.
I'm grateful to the Vegan/Organic Magazine for a great article on exactly what the movement is, what you can do yourself, and some exciting courses.
This year we have had two groups, and they are currently organising their class plans for presentation in November.

These intensive courses are very practical, and are not assessed on "exams" or written papers (except for one essay at the end). Instead they are assessed on a real time presentation of some of the classes, during a replica weekend course. So you get a chance to show how well you can get the principles and knowledge, and practical demonstrations across to a group of real people. I think that teaching the Living Foods Programme is so important, that assessment on question papers, done at home, with the internet on one hand and Dr Ann's books and mine on the other, is rather a waste of time, and absolutely no indication of how familiar you are with all the information, or how well you can actually inspire a group of people.

If this way of learning appeals to you, have a look at the course description and application form CLICK HERE, and send me a message that you would like advance notice of the next course in spring 2009. Click here to contact us.
